What is Yagyu Shinkage Ryu?

Yagyu Shinkage Ryu is one of the most famous and influential Kenjutsu styles. Founded by Yagyu Muneyoshi, a respected swordsman from Yagyu in western Japan, his life changed dramatically after he met Kamiizumi Isenokami Nobutsuna, the founder of Shinkage Ryu. Muneyoshi, unable to touch Nobutsuna in a challenge, became his apprentice and soon excelled in the art, particularly in "Muto-dori" or sword take-away techniques.

Muto-dori exemplifies the Japanese martial arts ideal of "Katsujin-ken" or "life-saving sword," which neutralizes an attacker by disarming them without causing death. After Muneyoshi's death, the style split into two lines: the Owari line, led by Yagyu Hyogonosuke, and the Edo line, led by Munenori.

Today, the Owari line is still headed by the 22nd headmaster, Yagyu Toshinobu, and remains one of the most practiced Koryu Bujutsu styles in Japan and internationally.
